David Gower was coolness personified as an elegant left-handed batsman and he has taken this laidback style with him into his new life as a TV commentator. Kent-born David amassed 8,231 runs in 117 Tests at an average 44.25, and added another 3,170 in 114 One Day Internationals.
He spent most of his career with Leicestershire, but played his final shots with Hampshire. Ambidextrous, he plays golf right handed and was an occasional bowler and magnificent fielder with his right. David famously got himself into hot water when he buzzed the pitch in a hired bi-plane while England were playing in a match in Queensland, and when England captain once cut short a press conference “because I have tickets for the theatre.”
It is this eccentricity that makes wine connoisseur David a joy to listen to in his after-dinner speeches that are always delightfully unpredictable.
