Charlie Magri was the little boxer with the big heart who won the British, European and world flyweight titles after an outstanding amateur career. Born in Tunisia but brought up in the East End, he won four ABA championships before turning professional in 1977.
A viciously hard and accurate combination puncher, he had his greatest night in March 1983 when he took the WBC world eight-stone crown from Eleoncio Mercedes of the Dominican Republic with a seventh round win at Wembley Arena. Charlie won 30 of his 35 professional fights, twenty-three inside the distance.
He became a publican after hanging up his gloves in 1986, and now shares memories of his eventful boxing career with audiences who are always won over by his pleasant personality.
