David Lloyd

David Lloyd is affectionately known throughout cricket as Bumble, a nickname that has stuck because of his facial resemblance to the Bumbles characters created by Goon comedian Michael Bentine. He had a distinguished career in cricket that included nine Test appearances as a solid and enthusiastic all-rounder. His outstanding performance was 214 not out against India at Edgbaston.

Captain of Lancashire for four years from 1973, Accrington-born David scored more than 19,000 runs during his 20 years at Old Trafford and took 237 wickets with his slow left-arm deliveries. He later became an umpire and then a top-rated coach before switching with huge success to commentating on Test Match Special and then Sky.

His sharp sense of humour and honest opinions have brought him wide popularity with viewers, and his brilliant after-dinner speeches are studded with jokes and asides that reveal why he is one of the most entertaining of all commentators.
